Why is it important to have a dream

I’ve just been asked this question this morning, and I think this issue is so fundamentally important that it deserved a short note. One of the questions I love to think about for myself is “What do you want?”

Think of your life as a ship. Would you rather be captain of your own ship, where you decide where it goes, how to navigate through the tides, and get to be the person that is revered when things go well? Or would you rather be one of the crew, letting others take control, and being at complete mercy of the sea? Your dreams are like your north star. They are a guiding light, shining brightly to get you to a destination. That north star may change its position from time to time, but you can always steer in its direction and know where you’re going. Otherwise, you may just end up lost at sea.

So lets translate this to real life. If you look at the most happy and successful people in life, they all had a dream. Martin Luther King in fact started his most famous speech telling everyone that he did. Margaret Thatcher, love her or hate her, will be remembered forever as one of the most powerful Prime Ministers we had. And yet, she started life from very humble beginnings, as a green grocers daughter. She was so sure of where she was going that she moulded her image, her voice, her confidence, and of course her education to become the Iron Lady that is so famous now. How about Richard Branson, Oprah Winfrey, David Beckham or Madonna? They all have one thing in common. They knew in their heart & soul what they wanted to do and were not afraid to go out and get it! And they didn’t all have the advantage of starting from wealth.

So for our lives, I would say that the scariest place to be is when you don’t know. My belief is when you’re in that space, you’re too scared to tell yourself the truth because you think it’ll be too hard or you never get there. But this is the very thing that will empower yout and start you on the journey. The more clear you are as to what your dreams or intentions are, the more likely you are to get them. In the words of Doreen Virtue, “God wouldn’t give us our dreams, if we couldn’t make them a reality”. So if there is something that you want with your heart and soul, you will get there. There is some wisdom in those Disney words “Dreams come true”, just allow yourself to believe it, and as I said in my post last night, don’t let anyone make you believe otherwise.
